River Wylye
Salisbury & District Angling Club
It was time to visit the Wylye again to see if the river level had returned to a more normal level. The answer was yes, and better still the river was clear with a good flow and there was plenty of weed growth evident. I wanted to test the effectiveness of different coloured cased caddis patterns. So I spent a very happy three hours fishing the river.
The hatch pool, where the old willow has fallen, gave up 3 grayling, with another deciding to snatch at the nymph just as the tail of the pool shallows. There were one or two Baetis rhodani, but I only saw three fish bulge to the ascending nymph; so my caddis nymphs didn't really have any competition.
The final result, other than a lovely time on the river, was eight grayling , two took a grey caddis and six the brown. I failed to test the dark green model as the brown was doing so well. Oh drat, I'll have to go fishing again to complete the experiment. The best fish was a beautiful thing of one and a half pounds.
